“Product of a Confused Mind”: Connecting the Pieces Through Collage Art and Free Writing
This research explores the therapeutic benefits of incorporating free writing after collage art making as a reflective practice in the art therapy process. A qualitative methodology is used, including perspectives from phenomenology and narrative analysis within an anti-oppressive framework, to explore the art and discover themes. The case study follows the art therapy process of Edith (pseudonym), a 92-year-old Asian woman, highlighting the transformative nature of this combined approach considering self-expression, emotional exploration, and overall well-being. Through a series of art therapy sessions, Edith's collage artworks are viewed with qualitative analyses to discover recurring themes and symbols that offer profound insights into her internal thoughts and emotions. As the field of art therapy evolves, this research advocates for the intentional integration of post-collage free writing as a qualitative reflective practice. The study enriches our understanding of the therapeutic potential of combining visual and written modes of expression, offering a holistic approach to mental health, self-discovery, and well-being.
