A Positive Art Therapy Seminar with Figure Skaters
by Jordyn Eberts
This thesis examines the experiences of seven figure skaters who engaged in a therapeutic arts and movement seminar called “Authentic Athletes”. The research topic, “Exploring the benefits of integrating positive art therapy and coaching in a single day seminar with figure skaters”,examines the benefits of art therapy with competitive athletes. This research considers integrating art therapy with athletics, prompting a new paradigm in the treatment of young, competitive athletes that also considers overall mental health and wellbeing, rather than primarily focusing on their performance outcomes. Empowerment in teen years can lead to healthy minds and bodies of athletes that lasts later in life. This seminar focused on the empowerment to develop a confident sense of self, to make meaningful connections with others and to find courage and inspiration. The findings in this thesis are based on both practical and theoretical research. This interdisciplinary research explores a new model of sports psychology and considers the use of art therapy with athletes as a valid treatment option. It is intended to contribute to an approach to mental health in sport, providing art therapists, coaches, and athletes an integrated format. The hope of this project is to inspire athletes and those that support them to respond to challenges in a new creative way-through therapeutic art and movement.
