611 - Art Therapy: Cultural Identity and Social Justice

2 credits / 30 hours

This course orients students to the complexities of cultural safety and social justice in art therapy practice. Culturally safe art therapy services are free of racism and discrimination, and support individuals to connect to their identity, culture, and community as sources of strength and inspiration. A culturally safe therapist demonstrates cultural awareness, humility, sensitivity, and competence. This course will support students to engage in self-reflective and collective learning experientials, with the intention to build their capacity to practice culturally safe art therapy and advocate for social justice in the profession. This course will invite explorations of how art-based practices can be a catalyst for social change and support community health and wellness.
